Parents are able to purchase any instrumental tuition from the music service. Currently we are offering keyboard, guitar and violin tuition. Parents commit to this on a two termly basis. To register interest online https://live.paritor.com/p/1748  If you have any queries please contact the music admin team at sian.noctor@southglos.gov.uk or call 01454 863147

Sport

We encourage participation in as many sports as is practical to organise. We participate in regular tournaments either organised by sports clubs or as part of the Emmaus school network. We have summer links with professional cricket coaches who provide free coaching sessions for all of our children.  Football, Tag Rugby, Netball, Hockey, athletics as well as cricket constitute our most popular sports.

We also take part in the Mangotsfield & Downend Olympiad during the summer as well as participate in the South Gloucestershire Sports Festival. Many of our children play within leagues for outside teams. Teachers offer after school clubs through their goodwill and we also have outside providers that supplement our provision at a cost to
parents.

To encourage children to travel actively to school, we participate in the travel tracker scheme. Children are awarded badges if they travel actively to school. This includes ‘park and stride’. This is where you park 5-10 minutes away and walk into school. Please see the Park and Stride map below.

LEGO

We have been part of the First Lego League for many years and build Lego robots to compete against other schools to complete as many tasks as possible set that year. Projects are also part of the league which are themed and judged by experts. We have reached the national finals twice. Recently we competed at the regionals and finished twelfth out of twenty.

After-School Clubs

Staff volunteer their services through their own goodwill to run an after school club each term. These clubs may be within sports or the arts. Computing and coding are also popular. We also have outside providers that supplement our provision at a cost to parents.

Children are expected to have a voice within the school, earn rewards and take on responsibilities. Being a ‘Buddy’ to a Reception child when in Year 6 is an important role enabling our caring ethos to be maintained and enhanced each year.

Residential Trips

Year 4 also have a residential visit to Kilve Court in Somerset where the focus is outdoor learning in the environment, engaging in woodland, river and beach studies. This is often the children’s first trip away from home!

Year 6 have a longer week-long residential to Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust just outside Abergavenny.  It is situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the summer. The activities are much more challenging and include caving, gorge walking, stand-up paddle boarding and orienteering.

Visitors

Finally, we strive to make our curriculum as exciting as possible by engaging specialist teachers to come in and create a real interest in their subjects. We’ve built a scaled Tudor house and Viking longboat, had scientists, volcanologists and Bristol Old Vic performing here. We invite authors such as poet Ian Bland or Daniel Morden to visit and take every opportunity to consolidate learning by visiting museums, art galleries and major cultural attractions to enhance our children’s experiences such as Covent Garden, St Fagan’s, Wigmore Hall, Stonehenge. Recently the children enjoyed visits from the science 'Exploredome' team and a theatre performance of 'The Secret Garden'.
